Minutes watched is such a weird metric for a movie. Like you could watch the first 5 minutes 20 times and it wouldn't really be the same as watching the whole movie.

On the other hand for this one maybe people jump to specific songs, dunno.

I thought it was very mediocre, but maybe a lot of kids watched it. That seems to be the target audience in terms of the depth of the story.

I just don't get it, I'm not trying to say it's bad or that people should hate it because different strokes and all. But I do not see why it's so popular, I tried to watch it with my kid who absolutely loves it but I was so bored by it that I struggled to stay awake.

People like the songs, I think that's it.

I thought it was pretty good. I wouldn't watch it again unless a kid wanted me to, but it was enjoyable

And Sony managed to blunder it all away.

It is the last song in the movie most likely.

It's a fun watch - it has likable characters, amusing gags, classic story themes repackaged into a 21st century setting, relatable protagonists, uplifting messaging, actually for real good life advice, honest depictions of people struggling with darkness inside themselves, redemption of people who believe they're irredeemable, and it's all wrapped in neat visuals, and comes with fun upbeat music.

Don't get me wrong, i wouldn't choose to watch it a second time, but it's definitely a good movie with a lot going for it

It's an interesting phenomenon. I think it really hit a family-pleasing sweet spot where it's some kids' favorite, including more boys that one might assume because stabby-stabby, but generally it's a pretty good "introductory text" for exploring intergenerational conflict, self-acceptance, and squaring the circle of conformity vs individualism. The visuals are very of the moment and professionally done; it reminds me a tiny bit of the spider-verse movies in that sense. It's all done well enough for most parents to tolerate replays. Then the songs are legitimately very catchy and sort of took over the role of the "summer jam" this year, prompting yet more rewatches, and finally Netflix in general has leaned into a lot of Korean media, meaning that aspect, watered down though it may be, probably helped with global popularity.

I dunno, kind of like some of the second- and third-tier Pixar and mainline Disney stuff, it's not that it's great, but a huge number of potential audience members collectively agreed it was very good. You can certainly argue it's not even as good as that, but it did the numbers it did, even faced with the fact that it launched sort of semi-quietly, to the point where they had no merch ready for months and had to slap together the singalong to get it a quick theatrical run.

I think the .5 was in my house.

I’m down with a bit of Frozen, Trolls, and many of the good ones, but I thought this one was naff. The whole story keeps telling the man character to come out to her friends and when she does she gets punished for it. Plus, none of the characters are actually likeable.

It’s absolutely because most people watched the whole movie exactly once then replayed just the songs hundreds of times.

This is one instance where I would love to see YouTube’s watch frequency heat map over the movie’s progress bar.

Sounded like a B-movie, I had very little in the way of expectations. Watched it and thought it was pretty good, wanted to tell my friends about this hidden gem. Found out it was one of the most popular movies ever.

Some of my friends blew up our group chat for three months over this movie. Like, it was good, but not that good. I don’t think any movie has ever been that good.

Likability is pretty subjective, but I think that for the age it's aiming at it makes sense to have a little more conflict around the main dilemma. Shows for elementary school and younger are often "you don't want to do something? Just do it!" And that maybe makes sense because the audience may be too young to understand nuance, but as you get older you understand that sometimes people's initial reactions can change and people can grow. It wasn't just about her learning a lesson, it was about her friends learning to accept her too. They realized their preconceived notions that they were indoctrinated with may not be correct and their relationship with their friend was able to help them grow. If anything it's about overcoming those feelings, both against others and yourself and the power of community in the process. I'm not saying it's a perfectly coherent movie, but I think that level of dilemma matches the age range I'd expect to be most interested in the movie. Sometimes you do something scary and it's not immediately perfect and that's ok. It's something you can work towards and that can be overcome. It doesn't mean it wasn't worth it, because what would be worse is never embracing who you really are. I think the movie does a good job of at least getting that point across.
