‘Everybody’s at each other’s throats’: James Cameron says he has left the US permanently
-
Every one of us profits from a system that exploits workers. There are workers who can't even get online, they're suffering more than you, and what little you have is partly due to their underpaid efforts.
Don't let imperfection be the enemy of good. We're all a part of a system that exploits others, so that can't be any useful metric as it paints everyone.
eye roll

Why does a canadian have an obligation to help the US?
He owns more wealth, property, and control of businesses in the US than well over 99% of Americans.

Americans made their choice

You're describing a valid criticism of Capitalism, which I share 100%.
I just don't think that translates well to a direct guilt for Cameron.
He couldn't have brought his movies to the screen if he didn't work within this system.
Of course now that he's been successful, he could definitely donate his wealth. On the other hand, I could also donate all $50k of my life savings without starving, while others are currently starving.
And I'm not going to do it. I carry the same type of guilt, only with lower numbers.Solidarity is working within the system. If he has the ability to negotiate that compensation for himself he can negotiate it for the other people working on the project instead, he just didn't.

How many dives to the Mariana Trench have you achieved?
He hasn't done a decent movie since aliens but I guess your right. He is a pussy who has done useless things but didn't insist on building the sub himself. Like other dumb asses have and failed.

Must be nice to have the ability to do it.

He always struck me as a pussy.
Why are you letting pussies strike you? Thats some cowardly behavior, stand up for yourself!
-
ITT: People mad that Canadian celebrity won't stay in the US and fix it.
Man makes his wealth through the American movie industry, leaves when America gets bad.
Yeah I'd say everyone has the right to be angry at that.
Edit: extremists are a plague

In order for another persons opinion to matter I have to care about them in some way.

Fuck that. Get your able-bodied ass back here and help us fix this shit, you coward!

To be fair; famous people usually get shat on (and rightly so) when speaking about politics
Because their "politics" usually involves everyone ignoring their grievances in favor of preserving celebrities' comfort.

America was good enough for him to stay and make millions. As soon as things aren't perfect, he wants to run to where the grass is greener. That's a good reason to be angry.
-
More like- just a rich douche seeing the way the wind is blowing, and is getting out before the guillotines are built.
Why would he stay and help you if you're just going to guillotine him afterwards?
-
Yup. I mean, I get it, but I would not advertise it. If everyone jumped ship, those that simply couldn’t would drown within it, so he isn’t exactly helping the situation. Need every vote possible, and dollar for that matter.
I mean, remaining on a sinking ship doesn't save anyone else from drowning. Some people have a life raft, I can't blame them for using it. I would get out if I could, cause things don't seem to be getting better anytime soon except on the off chance the midterms actually save us.
Ideally, the folks getting away on the life rafts wouldn't be determined by how much money they have. Maybe send the most vulnerable first, and the people with the means to resist stay behind. But that's not how this situation works, unfortunately.
It's a crabs-in-a-bucket situation. Why pull down the ones who can escape?

Sooo… meta has less money now?
Not really, they fired thousands of people right away to offset the cost of paying old Jim here. So he fundamentally disrupted all those lives, and the lives of the worker's dependent families, and now he's bouncing with the spoils.

Must be nice to be so rich you can just decide to leave.
Canada has a working holiday visa with the US
It's an open work visa for 1 year, and it renewable. Cost a few hundred between passport, paperwork, and other fees when I did it
It's available to all Americans without a criminal history, if they are below the age of 30 or 35 (I forget the exact requirements for each cut off)
You don't have to be rich. I was working as a line cook when I saved up enough to move

He owns more wealth, property, and control of businesses in the US than well over 99% of Americans.
The most effective thing he can do it take that tax revenue out of the US. Now New Zealand and Canada will be reaping all the benefits of having him there
-
"At each other's throats?" 30% of the country is behaving like Nazis, others are calling them on it, and a disturbing percentage are silent. Yes I suppose more people could be silent to help preserve his feelings.
He has the money and platform to speak out. Instead he leaves.
He can still speak out just as well
Money is also the #1 thing this adminitration cares about. Cameron taking him money, businesses, and most importantly tax dollars to NZ and Canada instead is the most impactful individual action he could do
-
That's probably the one area where he comes off most as a douche. He's notoriously demanding to work with
He also, earlier on, had a history of less safe practices
But I'd put him as one of the few wealthy people that actually created something others can't. His movies are a creation of his own. Not the result of inevitable scientific advancement
OpenAI/ChatGPT was the result inevitable scientific advancement. The game changer was a publicly published academic paper (by a Google researcher), not anything Sam Altman or OpenAI did. Same can be said about a lot of modern products that created our wealthiest billionaires

Would you prefer he stay in the US and continue funding this regime?
Trump cares about money and power. Taking away some money is about the strongest message a non-politician can send. It also doesn't stop him speaking out, or funding opposition. He can still do everything else
The only real result is that the US is losing his tax dollars and businesses. That's what you're complaining about.
