Not surprised. I had a friend who was all hyped up about this years ago and I didn't want to tell him then that it looked like pipe dream that was never going to pan out.
The MMORPG genre is dead, you have the big existing titles that exist simply because they're too big to fail or already have an entrenched user base, but I just can't see a new release - especially a new IP - breaking into the market.
-
Oof. I remember my friend hyping it up when the Kickstarter launched in 2017... I'm aching for a new MMORPG but it's so unfortunate all the new ones either come out half-baked or flop completely.
-
Wrong Ashes. You're thinking of Ashes of the Singularity, which is an RTS.

I'd say a big part of that is that no major player in the video game industry is still interested in investing long-term into building something. Games like FFXIV started out with huge losses, and they kept with it. Any worthwhile MMO is going to have falterings like that at some point in its life, and they'd need investors that can actually stay calm about that. In today's markets, where they expect development time to be something like 1-2 years for something that must follow every monetizing trend (battle pass, loot boxes, etc) it's extremely unlikely. It's probably not consumer expectations making it impossible.
-
Lol, there was a public playtest 2 days ago. They promised a mount and there were so many players stuck in queue. Originally they did not plan to reward the players in queue but changed their mind during the playtest. And now there probably won't even be a game.

How is this a TIL? There are hundreds of games released every day, obviously just about any word combination with one word being different will exist.

Well, part of why they want to follow the latest monetisation trends is that the idea of a subscription-based game is a much harder sell these days than it was 20 years ago. The landscape is just different.

I mean, by his very limited statement it seems like they had the best intentions? The board just called their bluff and said 'fuck you' and fired everyone.

Maybe they just today learned this?
