first of all: skill issue on mastodons part. they should git gud
that aside, an idea i had with outpost was to split tags into two "purposes", one as the same thing as hashtags we have now, the other as what id call "streams", which let you categorize your own posts and boosts without letting other people search for those. once you have that something along the lines of following a subset of someone's "streams" comes naturally
also, +1 on the footnotes thing. may as well make that official. and since it's a custom extension you may be able to add it to boosts as well -

It does, it was IIRC originally intended so that wafrn-to-wafrn could show the correct tags, but we're phasing out the idea of using tags as a way to provide subtext/footnotes/a PS. section/extra thoughts as part of this redesign
We probably won't make spaces and such impossible in the tags field, though. -
