Seems like a nice occasion for a reminder that this stuff is all made and run on a volunteer basis. There are many ways to contribute, but the easiest by far is by donating a little bit of money on a regular basis! Don't be deterred by feeling you have to give a lot - if a lot of people give a little that's much better. So give a little!
I use Liberapay, but patreon and ko-fi links are available under the "Donate" menu entry at piefed.social. The average LiberaPay contributor gives less than a dollar per week—which is awesome.
Alternatively, if you're on another instance, consider giving a little bit to your instance to help keep it running! It's all running on love and goodwill, and it works precisely because people like you decide it's worth contributing.
It's absolutely worth it to give to the Piefed project for how much effort these folks put in. If I were a developer I'd contribute that way, too.
