@julia@eepy.moe convince them to move to an entirely new platform while conveniently ignoring the costs of training every existing employee on how to use the new system, the costs of deployment, the costs of migration (especially the associated loss in business productivity because efforts are being spent on the migration). etc

@julia@eepy.moe i fucking hate those people that are like "just use linux" ok sure man are you paying out of pocket for the infrastructure migration? we have hundreds of people used to windows, their m365 email. if you're going to migrate all of those emails to a different platform, preserving the existing emails and coming up with different solutions like thunderbird to replace outlook...

@julia@eepy.moe i am a windows and *nix sysadmin. i don't particularly like my windows systems but i don't sit there trying to knee jerk replace them. there are places i have thought about doing so. i want to replace our windows print server with freebsd running CUPS w/ samba connected to AD in order to avoid paying for windows server 2025 or whatever (the machine is literally just dedicated to printers, an entire windows server standard license dedicated to the print spool service and some ad stuff for access control).

@julia@eepy.moe but like im not going to just fucking come in one day and go "no more active directory" like fuck, you know ad has its uses and it's hard to find a replacement. https://www.port389.org/ is not a replacement. i would basically have to find a new way of doing gpo (ansible exists yes but that's not the same fucking thing is it?) etc blah blah blah

@julia@eepy.moe like ive been interested in samba's ability to be a DC. i think i might be able to shave off more windows hosts by having ADFS with some samba DCs... but like rn we don't have adfs setup. openLDAP is not a replacement and when i need to have access controls for windows & macos clients (yes)...

@julia@eepy.moe i shill ZFS but work has a fucking windows storage server. bare metal. so fucking stupid. i want to replace it with FreeBSD (since i can expose both NFSv4 & SMB...) like i can basically replace a majority of the directory with non windows machines but like the DC needs to be windows

@julia@eepy.moe but also oh god the thought of dealing with SYSVOL on a non windows machine especially since the domain controller kinda relies on that storage server...
