Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.

Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted. This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate. We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history. This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you’re submitting before posting to see if it’s already been posted. We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed. No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don’t share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine. We don’t want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

Why invest in new games, when you can just raise prices on existing ones?
  • Why do you need a launcher? (asking older gamers actually)

All of my systems are Linux, launching Windows games on Linux is not trivial, Steam takes away almost all of that complication. It also provides an excellent ten foot interface for me to use on my TV and buy/install/launch games from my couch without any hassle. Speaking of controller usage, Steam provides excellent support to remap controllers even if a game doesn't support it, and provide amazing features at that (for example multiple layers, gyroscopic mouse) Games getting updated automatically is a great feature, I still remember having to download patches and applying them one by one after a fresh install. Similarly Steam also provides a workshop that allows you to install mods and keep them synced across different systems automatically. Finally, the convenience of cloud saves for someone with multiple systems or who uninstalls a game and reinstalls it later is not easy to achieve without a launcher (I still have a saves folder backed up somewhere from before). Besides all of that Achievement and other social features are important for some people. And for some games being able to easily play online with friends is amazing (if you're not old enough to know what GameSpy is you don't know what it was back then), although I don't play too many online games so this one is not that important for me, but when I need that feature it is very handy. In short there are many reasons, but if you're playing old single-player games with mouse+keyboard on only one windows PC, then none of my reasons apply to you. Still I would argue that buying games on steam is easier than pirating them, so there's the convenience factor still (e.g. at a friend's house and they mention a game, open my phone, and in 5 min with a very intuitive flow I have the game downloading on my home PC so when I come back it's ready to play).

I feel like Halo could be equated to like "early Federation" from Star Trek (I'm not a Trekkie, but I know some things). Like how humanity discovers FTL space travel and the rest of the galaxy opens up to them and we meet a technologically superior faction of advanced alien races. That's probably where the similarities end, but it does paint a slightly hopeful light on humanity's future, even if it is entirely fiction.

Tbf, I don't think Apex Legends was completely new either. It refined and combined a lot of good ideas in other games into a battle royale. I think they're trying to do that with this type of hero shooter vibe, having taken some ideas from Rainbow 6 Siege and a few other games. Doesn't seem to have worked as well this time.

Yo be fair a large and I do mean VERY large chunk of those players are in the Chinese custom games. It's not abnormal for like a third or more of the player base of dota 2 at any given time to be playing the custom Chinese games. Dota 2 is as much a games platform as it is a game it self. Much like warcraft 3 was, or roblox or fortnite is now. There's been instances where a new update for some of the more popular Chinese custom games can spike the number of people playing. Them to half the entire player base. It's very very fair to say dota 2 isn't that popular. Cause the game itself isn't... It's custom game modes and gatchas are. Hell there's one custom game that's literally a mobile gatcha game that i saw pulling over 60k players by itself.

They definitely do! A very distinctive look for FC2, another thing that sets it apart from the rest of the series. (I mean, OK, Blood Dragon is very distinct, too, but that's kind of another thing.) Unfortunately, there are still no computers that can run Crysis well. Some things are outside the reach of current science. Maybe in another ten years or so, we'll get there. It's still worth playing, though.

That was how my Highschool was growing up too (way after Halo’s hay day interestingly enough). I figured out how to get a copy of Custom Edition to run that had all the CE maps on it. Passed that out in woodshop one day on a USB drive and everyone got a copy on their School Issued laptops. we had a huge ass LAN party going 5 days a week

I don't really care if they want to rework the good/evil system. What sucks is that they took out the body morphing completely so your character model won't change with the skills they're acquiring. Seems like a lazy choice, and doesn't bode well for the rest of the game IMO.

Do you say the same for Epic Games Store exclusives? Yes, actually. If they funded a game, like with Alan Wake 2, then whether or not they make it an EGS exclusive is their prerogative. there is no pro-consumer reason that the GOG fixes could not have been given to everyone that already owned the game on Steam as a free update I disagree. GOG invested time and resources into patching the game. Tacking the word ‘pro-consumer’ in there means nothing. They’re a business. They shouldn’t be expected to give away their work for free to customers of a competing platform. I don't care if 2% or whatever goes to GOG for their fixes That much is clear. You seem to want something for nothing. Pirate the GOG version if you’re so desperate to play without paying for the work that went into fixing it, but don’t frame it as some kind of pro-consumer protest.
