Honestly, I would rather pay for quality than be forced to accept a bad update like this one, at least with paid DLC you know what to avoid. The game is still wide as the ocean, deep as a puddle. It's becoming a salad of minigames without any regard to its original premise - a lonely space traveller.
I will play Snowrunner if I want to play offroad trucker, this update is another cheap imitation from HG.

Ive been thinking about buying this game for ages, but im just wondering if its gotten better from the original version which i believe was a total flop?
The promise of the original game was never fulfilled but the game we now have is good in its own way.
Don’t expect “lone space adventure” and you’ll be ok. The game is a survival game at its core and requires you to gather materials . . . In space!
Some people (me) can’t stand games that are just well-disguised work, no matter how pretty.

Pretty sure the ***chill *** portion of the fanbase will disagree with the survival aspect of the game and note how mundane it is, unless you blindfold yourself and never use any scanner.

Issue with that is I pre-order the game before release based on false information. Gave up playing after 6 months because it sucked. When they finally got it to what they initially promised. It became almost unplayable by the amount of grinding that had to be done to even earn enough to by a freighter. Again gave up playing. So now sits on my shelf part of my collection.
Oh almost forgot when they updated they corrupted my save file so I lost all the progress I made in that 6 months. So that pissed me off as well.
The important thing for me is that they didn't just shrug and move on to something else. The devs take the issues and suggestions and work towards a better game each time. What other company has completely overhauled a game like this?

Nah, the length of an artwork does not indicate depth, tons of TV shows lasting over 10 seasons and 42 mins per episodes and they are still shallow, still don't pack a punch like the good old BBC Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Alec Guinness plays the role to perfection.
But remember, that's where they spent their development time, instead of improving the original concept... Oh, wait, they still have the sandbox as the shield to widen the ocean as much as possible.

A good game doesn't have to be that deep. As a matter of fact, I don't have time to invest in a game (or show) that deep. Give me endless 42 minute episodes of easy to follow formulaic slop that I can watch as I cook dinner for the fam after getting off work.
NMS has found their niche of easy fun mini games in a vast somewhat predictable universe. They aren't trying to capture players who are looking for the kind of deep stories and mechanics like you and that's okay.
Another good example: My uncle is a father of 5 with a job who occasionally has time to jump onto NMS and run a quick mission. Over the last decade he's racked up 1k+ hours of distraction. 10/10.

There are mountains of Diorama Builders trying to do exactly what the chill crowd want.
Those are way more honest chill games than a fanbase trying to claim to be the best space game, yet you do garbage collection.
I mean, sure, I love to turn off my brain as well when I watch Supernatural, but it is a shallow show despite its charm. xD

They saw the lowest of lows at launch and clawed their way back to a 80%+ mostly positive rating with consistent 10k+ player count most days.
Some may not enjoy it and that's their opinion but they are pulling more player numbers and higher ratings and most other 10+ yr old games.

You tell that to the chill players when people mention "improve combat", but why do fans complain when it is free, right? It is wild. xD

Why not? Not only you was much different, the game was a different man too. I want to like this game, but the gameplay loop and activities seem not for me. I played it for a few hours years ago and might go back and try again.
I've played it after several of the updates and it's pretty much the same game with a new coat of paint. A mile wide and an inch deep. But the game keeps getting wider and playing it now for the first time would probably be pretty great.
I loved it when it first came out because since I was a little boy playing Atari in the 80s I wanted to play a game where I could fly to space, between planets, and back in real time. This was the first game that gave me a satisfying experience like that. And it's still my favorite part.
Edit: I played Star Citizen after which is a better experience for that, I put ~80 hours in so if it never comes out I got my $50 worth of play time. But I stay fairly close to development on it hoping I'll get to play a finished version someday.

Nothing is ever perfect, but would you have preferred they did nothing, ran with the money and pissed on you? Now they just managed to disappoint you more than once. Many others seem to be happy now. For free. While the vast majority of other companies wouldn't even bother SELLING you updates.
Sure, they didn't manage to appease 100% of customers, but they really tried to make up for it. That should count for something, shouldn't it?Sure does. Just not sure I can get back into this game.

You can absolutely call a game people have played for over a thousand hours shallow. No idea why you think you can’t. Lots of very shallow games have dedicated user bases with thousands of hours.

I’ve started fresh a number of times with these updates and unfortunately what that does is just highlight how disparate and tacked-on many of them are. They do not make for a coherent, well integrated experience at all. I’m certain it’s a better experience to just be a long time player who logs back in for every update.
